Jewish Community
The Jewish community will have several opportunities to commemorate September
11 as Jews and as Americans at memorial programs sponsored by the Rabbinical
Association of Greater Kansas City and area congregations. In accordance with
Jewish tradition, observances will begin the evening before the day of commemoration.
On September 10, at 8:15 p.m. at the Jewish Community Campus, members
of the Rabbinical Association will lead a brief memorial service.
"The service will provide an opportunity for the community to come together
and commemorate the horrific events of last September," said Rabbi Amy Wallk
Katz, president of the Rabbinical Association.
The atmosphere at the Jewish Community Campus on September 11 will be
transformed the entire day, starting at 8:00 a.m. Sacred space will be created
in the rotunda area for the continuous reading of names of victims of the
terrorism by representatives of area congregations and agencies. The reading
will be punctuated by brief services at 8:00 a.m., Noon, 4:00 p.m. and 7:30
p.m., conveniently scheduled to coincide with times when many have reason
to be at or near the campus. Rabbis will lead participants in prayer, including
the recitation of Psalms and "El Melei Rachamim," which asks God to accept
the souls of those who have died into the bonds of eternal life.
"Over time, I'm sure America will work out different ways, spiritually and
otherwise, to commemorate September 11," says Rabbi Daniel Horwitz of
Congregation Ohev Shalom, who is coordinating the rotunda activities. "This
is our attempt to provide that opportunity to the Jewish community."
Before observances begin at the campus on the morning of September 11,
Temple B'nai Jehudah invites the community to participate in its own special
pre-dawn program. Starting at 5:20 a.m., in the Temple Learning Center parking
lot at 12320 Nall Ave, congregants will light more than 3,000 yahrzeit candles,
one for each of the victims of the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and Flight
93, in the presence of an honor guard representing Overland Park police, fire
and ambulance services.
"We are fulfilling our role as a congregation committed to acts of social
justice and civic responsibility," said Rabbi Marc Disick. "One way we can
acknowledge the services of the men and women who participated in rescue efforts
in New York, Pennsylvania and Washington, D.C., is by honoring the men and
women who, if need be, would do the same here." Prior to joining the
Temple in July, Rabbi Disick served as a volunteer chaplain at a Red Cross
Family Center on Manhattan's West Side. "I learned that the grief experienced
after such evil is qualitatively different from that which follows illness
or random tragedy," he said. "My experiences made me feel especially called
upon to help the Temple create a unique tribute."
"Ritual makes us stronger by externalizing and making part of the community
what we're feeling internally," said Rabbi Mark Levin of Congregation Beth
Torah. "This will be a day of ritual and commemoration nationwide, one that
will be acutely felt in the Jewish community. So many have died in Israel.
Al Queda has targeted Jews. We know that the enemy is out there, specifically
looking for us."
For more information about plans to commemorate September 11 in the
Jewish community, call Rabbi Amy Wallk Katz at 913.851.9448.
